The Laboratory of Biochemical Engineering & Environmental Technology (LBEET) was founded in 1990 and established in 2002, with the purpose of conducting research and providing training in the field of development, design, mathematical modeling, and optimization of biochemical processes that have application in the production of high added value biotechnology products and in the treatment and valorization of wastewaters and industrial waste. The research at LBEET covers a wide range of objects that include basic research of the main mechanisms that take place in the studied biochemical processes as well as the design and optimization of bio-processes on an industrial scale. Emphasis is given on both biological and combined (biological - physicochemical) processes for the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients (removal of nitrogens from liquid waste, accumulation in natural ecosystems, nitrogen cycle and phosphorus in nature), removal of xenobiotic substances from liquid waste and integrated processing of agricultural and industrial waste.

More specifically, innovative technologies and integrated management methods are developed for the processing and valorization of various types of agroindustrial, agricultural and organic residues and energy plants, while producing high added value products (eg bioplastics, bio-surfactants, etc.) and / or energy through the production of gaseous and liquid biofuels such as methane, hydrogen, bioethanol and others. At the same time, current environmental tools and techniques such as Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) are used to assess environmental impacts along with the development of new bio-products or processes and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in combination with system optimization methods for the optimal and integrated management of municipal solid waste.

The University of the Aegean, through its research potential and research laboratories, has developed successful collaborations with research institutes, businesses, as well as with developmental, social, and business entities. These collaborations have been achieved through joint educational and research programs and exchanges in the framework of national and European programs such as the 2007-2013 ESPA, H2020, European Territorial Cooperation, Erasmus + and other development initiatives.

In the context of the 2007-2003 ESPA (ΕΣΠΑ), and more specific, actions funded by EPAN II (ΕΠΑΝ ΙΙ) ( “Synergasia” 2009 & 2011, bilateral cooperation with Israel, research infrastructures, innovation vouchers), the University of the Aegean has successfully completed 33 projects in collaboration with enterprises and research institutions, with a total budget of 1.800.849,79 euro.

During 2014-2016, the University of the Aegean has collaborated with more than 40 research and business stakeholders in the context of joint research projects of FP7 and H2020 (for example, project acronyms are presented: SCALES, LEDDRA, STEP, VOLANTE, CLIMSAVE, COEUS-TITAN, WIQ-EI, KNOW-ME, ENGAGE, COCONET, HERCULES, RESPONSIBILITY, MOOC, CREA, EU COMMUNITY, PORTOPIA, PROMERC, BENEFIT, EXTRA-LASER).

The cooperation between the the University of the Aegean and the business sector is mainly related to the environment, computer and communications, education, the sea, entrepreneurship, shipping, tourism and culture.

Finally, the University of the Aegean has collaborated with companies to transfer know-how from research laboratories and teams to them (in the fisheries, shipping, product and packaging design, communication and IT technologies, etc.)
